Waiver Wire Wisdom: Week 23

3 min read

We’re down to the semifinals for most fantasy basketball leagues. If you’ve followed this series, you still know the usual suspects to go pick up. Most of the players I suggested last week are still viable and available. Here I’ve gone deeper to find some of those less obvious gems to go after. I’ve targetted some potentially helpful guys to consider that are available in at least 80% of Yahoo leagues. Go make some moves and get your squad into the championship round!

RODIONS KURUCS – BROOKLYN NETS SF

Strengths: Boards, 3’s, Steals

Availability: 80% of Yahoo Leagues

After a nice run in the middle of the season, we’ve seen a return to relevance for Kurucs aka Hot Rod aka Robert Smith (The Cure). The Nets have a measly 2 games on slate next week, and an average 3 games in the championship week, so mute your expectations. He’s still a good pickup in deeper leagues.

KEVIN HUERTER – ATLANTA HAWKS SG

Strengths: 3’s, Points, FT%, Assists

Availability: 80% of Yahoo Leagues

Red Velvet has posted back to back nice games, where he’s been super efficient, put up 8 combined 3’s and contributions across the board. The Hawks get 3 games a piece this week and next, but the rookie has been heating up at the right time.

MONTE MORRIS – DENVER NUGGETS PG

Strengths: Points, 3’s Assists, Steals

Availability: 85% of Yahoo Leagues

Denver goes 4 and 4 to close out the fantasy season, so take advantage of the hot hand in Morris. IT2 has officially been booted from the rotation, so it should be clear sailing for Monte to soak up backup minutes from both guard spots.

DELON WRIGHT – MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES SG

Strengths: Assists, Steals, Points

Availability: 85% of Yahoo Leagues

Delon has played well over his last 5 games, contributing in multiple categories, flashing some of the potential he showed in Toronto. Avery Bradley has soaked up most of the playing time and usage from the 2, but he’s starting to force his way into a bigger role and Memphis will want to get a good read on what he can do heading into free agency.

MASON PLUMLEE – DENVER NUGGETS C

Strengths: Boards, Blocks, Assists

Availability: 86% of Yahoo Leagues

The 2nd Denver bench player to make this list, Plumlee has played well of late, even sharing the floor with starter Nikola Jokic. He can provide nice boards, blocks, and out of position assists. Just be aware that his free throws can be problematic. Again, the 4 and 4 game weeks are golden.

EMMANUEL MUDIAY – NEW YORK KNICKS PG

Strengths: Points, Assists, 3’s

Availability: 86% of Yahoo Leagues

With the Knicks playing 4 games this week and 2 games in the championship week, it makes sense to roll the dice on Mudiay for this week and move on for next week, assuming you advance. He put up an efficient 21/4/4 with 3 3’s in his last one. The Knicks’ rotations are always hard to figure out, but he’s the only healthy PG at the moment.

TYUS JONES – MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES PG

Strengths: Assists, Steals, 3’s

Availability: 88% of Yahoo Leagues

With Jeff Teague and Derrick Rose battling injuries, and the Timberwolves all but eliminated from the playoffs, it only makes sense to give Jones more run. If he can start getting 30 minutes a game…look out. He can be an elite steals and assists contributor and can bring in stats across the board. Don’t let the average 3 and 3 finish to the Wolves fantasy season dissuade you. He could easily pay off big.
